Case Study

How Liquid built its core engineering team with Contrario

When Liquid hired its first in-person engineer, the company was just its founder and a few contractors. Contrario placed that engineer, and every core engineering hire that followed, as Liquid grew from an early-stage startup into a Series A company.

Liquid is a fintech company building a unified trading platform that gives retail traders leveraged access to crypto and other markets through a single interface. Founded by Franklyn Wang, a former quantitative researcher at Two Sigma, the company raised a Paradigm-led seed round and has since closed an $18M Series A.

Contrario placed Liquid's first in-person engineer when the company was still just Wang and a handful of contractors, and stayed on as its engineering hiring partner through everything that followed.

The Problem

A founder, a few contractors, and a very specific bar

At the earliest stage, Liquid was building the foundation of its product with a lean team. The first in-person engineer was a pivotal hire: someone who could build the initial infrastructure, get the product off the ground, and help define the engineering culture from day one.

What Liquid needed was rare. The company runs on high-agency engineers: ICs who own their work end to end and ship without much management around them. The first hire had to be exactly that, someone who could clear a steep technical bar with little oversight and take an early bet on a company that was still mostly an idea.

The Solution

Rare engineers, already in network

Liquid came to Contrario for reach. Finding a high-agency engineer willing to bet on a company that barely existed yet meant tapping a small, specific pool, and Contrario's network at top schools and companies had them. Contrario calibrated to what a "cracked, in-person engineer" meant for Liquid: ICs who could clear a steep bar and own their work with little oversight.

Because the sourcing was that tight, the candidates who reached Liquid had effectively cleared the bar before the first call. Contrario only sent the engineers worth Liquid's time, so Liquid could move fast on a shortlist it trusted.

"The people they brought us were the real thing. Every one of them could actually build."

— Franklyn Wang, Founder & CEO, Liquid

The first hire was Winston Chang, a Stanford new grad who became Liquid's first in-person engineer. Over his first nine months he built much of the company's early infrastructure and helped set its engineering culture. Contrario followed with Jason Son, a UC Santa Cruz grad with an ex-founder background who brought both IC strength and a builder's instinct, and William Khouy, an engineer who came from Mercury and brought directly relevant fintech experience. Each came from a different background, and each cleared the same bar.

The impact

A core engineering team, built from the first hire to Series A

From a founder and a few contractors, Liquid built out a three-person in-person core engineering team through Contrario, plus a growth marketer who helped redesign the site and get the brand in front of new users.

The impact compounded. The engineers Contrario placed built much of Liquid's core product and drove the user growth that carried the company into its Series A.

"Contrario is how you find the people the whole company gets built around, not just the next open seat."

— Franklyn Wang, Founder & CEO, Liquid

Now at Series A, Liquid is continuing to scale its engineering team and plans to keep building it with Contrario.
